The rules of systems change at different scales
Core Idea
What works at one scale often breaks or backfires at another. That’s because scale doesn’t just make things bigger, it changes the way they behave. Physics, biology, economics they all show this.
In science, adding heat to ice melts it. Add the same energy to boiling water, and nothing happens until it hits a threshold: phase change. Same input, different outcome because the system’s at a different scale.
In the stock market, buying $1,000 of a small-cap stock may move nothing. Try moving $10 million and you’ll distort the price. You’ve crossed a threshold where your actions reshape the system itself.
This is why scaling up a product, a company, or a process isn’t just doing more of the same. At larger scales: feedback loops emerge, coordination costs rise, human factors shift (trust -->process –->politics).
Understanding scale means noticing when the game has changed and adapting your strategy before old habits start failing.
Practice
- Name the system. What are you building, leading, or analyzing?
- Identify its current scale. Tiny (1-1), mid-size (team/system), or large (network/ecosystem)?
- Spot what’s breaking. Where are previous solutions failing or slowing things down?
Example 1 - Words, Books, Libraries
- System: Information storage
- Scale: From a single word to book to entire library
- Breaking point: Raw accumulation makes retrieval impossible
Example 2 - Solo Dev to Engineering Team
- System: Internal tooling
- Scale: 1 to 6 engineers
- Breaking point: Everyone edits in isolation; duplicated effort, bugs, no traceability
Example 3 - Community Garden to Food Coop
- System: Neighborhood food production
- Scale: 8 people to 50+
- Breaking point: Informal roles cause missed tasks and friction

Other Considerations
The most dangerous mistake is thinking things will scale linearly.
They don’t.
A brilliant 1-person workflow might fail completely in a team of 5. A decision that works in a local community might backfire at a national level. Tools that succeed in early-stage companies often collapse under growth.
