Core Idea

Opportunity cost is what you give up when you say yes to something. It’s not just about money it’s also time, attention, freedom, energy, relationships. Most people focus only on what they gain. This model makes you look at what you’re silently sacrificing.

Practicing opportunity cost makes you think like a strategist: lean, comparative, and deliberate. It turns decision-making into trade-off analysis.

Practice

  1. Pick a real decision you’re making (personal or professional).
  2. Ask: What am I giving up by saying yes to this?
  3. List 2–3 alternatives you’re implicitly rejecting.
  4. Compare: Is your current choice worth more than what you’re losing?
  5. Adjust if needed.

Example 1 - Career Path
You say yes to a stable job.
What are you giving up? Creative control, high risk/high reward, and autonomy. Are those trade-offs worth the security of a steady paycheck?

Example 2 - Time Use
You scroll for an hour.
What are you giving up? Momentum, learning, focus.
Was the 1h scroll more valuable than those alternatives?

Example 3 - Relationships
You invest in someone out of habit or fear of being alone.
What are you giving up? Emotional compatibility, energy, long-term alignment.
Does staying in this connection really serve you?

Other Considerations

People often pretend there’s no cost to their yes. But everything costs something. Invisible costs are still costs.
