First Principles

Think from Scratch, Not by Habit

Share

Core Idea

Break things down to their essential components. Instead of copying others or tweaking existing solutions, you ignore convention and rebuild from truth.

Most people think in analogies “this worked before, let’s adjust it.” That’s fast but fragile. First Principles thinking is slower, but it gives you clarity and adaptability. It makes you a builder, not a borrower.

Used well, it’s how Elon Musk redesigned rockets. He didn’t copy NASA he asked, “What’s actually required to launch a rocket?” You can use it to reimagine products, habits, or systems.

Practice

  1. Pick a challenge.
  2. Write down your assumptions.
  3. Break the problem into its core parts.
  4. For each part, ask: is this a fact or just convention?
  5. Rebuild your solution from the ground up.

Example 1 - Health Goal

  • Challenge: “I want to lose weight.”
  • Assumptions to Question: I need a strict diet. I must join a gym. Weight loss is hard.
  • Breakdown: Food intake, movement habits, sleep quality.
  • Fact or convention? I overeat at night. I move less than 3k steps/day. I sleep poorly.
  • Rebuild: Set a fixed 7h sleep schedule, prep weekday lunches on Sunday, add a daily 30 min walk after lunch

Example 2 - Spending Habit

  • Challenge: “I spend too much on groceries.”
  • Assumptions to Question: Healthy food is expensive. Cooking takes too long.
  • Breakdown: Proteins, carbs, snacks, planning.
  • Fact or convention? I shop without a list. I snack out of boredom. I waste fresh food.
  • Rebuild: Plan meals every Sunday night, bulk-buy non-perishables monthly, Skip snacks unless planned.

Other Considerations

A common trap: confusing First Principles with just asking “why?” five times. True First Principles thinking requires rebuilding, not just questioning. If your solution looks the same after, you probably didn’t go deep enough.

Also, avoid assuming too much is fixed. Most “rules” are just habits in disguise.
