Attention

Attention is the real currency of action.

Core Idea

Where your attention goes, your time, energy, and decisions follow. Yet most people spend it reactively driven by urgency, noise, or whatever pings first.

This model treats attention as a finite asset. If you don’t allocate it with intention, someone else will allocate it for you.

It’s not about blocking distractions. It’s about deliberately choosing what earns your focus and auditing what doesn’t.

Practice

  1. List your current attention drains. Where does your focus go in a typical day? Be honest.
  2. Tag each as intentional or passive. Did you choose to give it attention, or did it just happen?
  3. Define 3 targets. These are people, problems, or projects that deserve your deep focus now.
  4. Reallocate. Schedule time, remove triggers, or shift inputs to protect those 3 targets.

Example 1 – Scattered Thinking at Work

  • List: Slack, inbox, and analytics tabs are open all day. Jump between channels every 5 minutes.
  • Tags: Passive attention no filter, just reacting.
  • Worthy Targets: Deep rewrite of onboarding flow, product analytics redesign, 1:1 coaching prep.
  • Action: Blocked 3x 90-min windows, disabled badges, auto-logged out of Slack.

Example 2 – Parenting

  • Audit: With kids but half-on phone, toggling between DMs and logistics.
  • Tags: Passive drift attention split, not chosen.
  • Worthy Targets: Evening playtime, weekend breakfast, bedtime stories.
  • Action: Phone in another room 7–9pm. Built LEGO 3 nights straight. Felt like a better dad in 3 days than in 3 weeks before.

Example 3 – Learning That Actually Sticks

  • Audit: Saved 80 articles, skimmed none. Opened YouTube to “learn” and watched 6 reaction videos.
  • Tags: Passive stimulus, not active intent.
  • Worthy Targets: Read one strategy book, take notes, write one insight per day.
  • Action: Created Sunday “learning zone”. One hour, one input. Already applied 2 ideas at work.

Other Considerations

Attention follows emotion. If you don’t create space for deliberate focus, you’ll chase dopamine loops, urgency cycles, or other people’s goals.

No amount of productivity hacks will help if your attention is leased out by default.

Protect your attention. Then aim it like a laser.
